Start/Finish Shift Duties

Duties as a Start/Finish Volunteer:

  • Setting up (BALLOON ARCH!) or breaking down of Start/Finish Area
  • Keeping Start/Finish Area clear of trash and other debris
  • Racer staging (start line)
  • Assisting athletes to the medical tent (finish line)
  • Handing athletes water, towels, and medals (finish line)
  • Collecting timing chips (finish line)
  • Timing or Transitions assistance
  • Floating (relieving Start/Finish volunteers for restroom and other SHORT 5 minute breaks)
  • COURSE MARSHALING (directing athletes where they need to go)
  • CROWD CONTROL (keeping crowds from interfering with the course of the race or stepping in front of racers… also keeping them out of athletes only areas)

Most of you will be doing COURSE MARSHALLING or CROWD CONTROL Once you are placed in an area, STAY IN THE AREA! Please do not move around! The areas we place you will be areas of high traffic and/or high importance. We need to know that the areas will be covered at all times. DO NOT LEAVE until you are relieved by: a FLOATER (short 5 minute or restroom breaks only), a volunteer from the next shift, or a Start/Finish committee member. Please wear your volunteer shirt at ALL TIMES in the Start/Finish area (if you do not wear it in Beach City there is a better chance it will stay clean). DO NOT wear any obvious logos on your clothing or you will be sporting some highly fashionable duck tape; there is a chance you will be on the news or ESPN!

Note: Each club will be divided into half, one shall take the early shift that day, and the other half shall take the later shift, NO EXCEPTIONS!

YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR GETTING TO THE START/FINISH AREA ON TIME!!!!!!

Morning Crew: Take bus or boat leaving every half hour starting at 5:30 am or walk 1 mile (Sat 6:00-12:30 MUST take the 5:30 'Eagle One' boat). Afternoon Crew: Come over in the morning BEFORE THE RACE STARTS or walk 1 mile
