Volunteer Guidelines
General Overview
The AVIA Wildflower Triathlon is the second largest triathlon in the world, with 6,000
athletes, 30,000 spectators, and over 1,000 volunteers attending each year. It has is a Half-Ironman
distance race held on the first weekend of May every year at Lake San Antonio in California since 1983.
Known for a particularly difficult and hilly course, it has expanded now to include three races of
different lengths. On Saturday there are two races, the Long Course is a 1.2 mile swim, a 56 mile bike,
and a 13.1 mile run. There is also a "Sprint" Mountain Bike Triathlon consisting of a 1/2 mile swim, a
10 mile bike, and a 2 mile run. On Sunday, the Olympic "International" Distance Race is held. It consists
of a 1.5k swim, a 40k bike, and a 10k run.
Volunteer Rules:
- There is no glass allowed in Beach City. This includes, but is not limited to, glass bottles,
salsa (and other condiment) jars, perfume/colognes, cosmetics mirrors, etc.
- NO HARD LIQUOR or KEGS
- NO BOATS or trailers
- NO PETS
- Any harmful or illegal items will be confiscated.
- All cars and persons are subject to search.
- No one under the influence of alcohol or other substances will be allowed
to volunteer and it will reflect poorly on their group.
- Volunteers must present their Cal Poly ID card!
- All volunteers must wear their wristband at all times.
- All volunteers must wear their volunteer t-shirt during all volunteer shifts.
- The volunteer entry gate will open on Friday at 9am and close at 8pm.
- Due to races in progress, the first chance any volunteer will have to leave will be Sunday at 3pm.
Any volunteer leaving early will be charged camping fees for the weekend.
- Volunteer will work 2 shifts up to 12 hours each.
Other Information:
- All Volunteers should car pool, there is a limited amount of parking available.
- Speak with your group rep, and know your volunteer shifts. If you miss a volunteer shift, your
group will be penalized.
- You must check-in with your team leader when arriving to each volunteer shift and must check-out to them
before leaving.
- Be prepared to wait at the front gate. There is always a wait to enter the park.
- Beach City will be closed during the races. No exceptions.
